The orbícola
'The daughter of D. John VI, born 1638, married Charles II in 1662. Marriage consolidated the Anglo-Portuguese alliance, especially important in the decades following the Restoration. [...] The statue was commissioned to sculptor Audrey Flack , who designed a huge bronze Catarina, with jewels, an orb in his hands and a tiara on her head '(Catherine and statue', Pedro Mexia, 'Current' / Expresso 30.04 .2011, p. 3).
All wrong, I know - but not all have a proofreader to correct them. D. Catherine of Braganza was the daughter of D. John IV, the Restorer (1604-1656). D. John VI, Clement, born over a century and a half later (1767-1826). Both kings are very marked to be mistaken, however. Twelve dictionaries I consulted the Portuguese language, and all 'orb' is registered as belonging to the male gender.
